Kuemper Catholic softball hosted a cancer-awareness game against Glidden-Ralston at the Carroll softball stadium and featured a tribute to cancer survivors, recognizing those who are in the battle for their lives.
On Tuesday, June 29, 2021, Kuemper Catholic softball hosted a cancer-awareness game against Glidden-Ralston at the Carroll softball stadium and featured a tribute to cancer survivors, recognizing those who are in the battle for their lives. An honor/memorial banner was hung on the fence, featuring names of those who have fought cancer. Individuals and businesses sponsored the names. Furthermore, admission was a free-will donation with proceeds going towards the St. Anthony Cancer Center. In all, the event garnered $3,473 which was presented to staff of St. Anthony on August 18th.
“I’m really impressed by the ownership taken by the girls and their families in preparing for our Strike Out Cancer game,” said Head Coach Erin Bohlmann. “It was beautiful to experience how a simple game of softball could unite so many people for a cause that hits close to home. The support from the community was incredible.”
Some players had family members diagnosed with cancer, and some players have family members that work in the Cancer Center. Each teamed donned blue and pink shirts, Kuemper in blue with pink lettering, and Glidden-Ralston in pink with blue lettering, the colors that signify colorectal cancer and breast cancer.
“These athletes have all been impacted by cancer,” said Trish Roberts, Development Director at St. Anthony. She added, “Whether it’s been a family member, a friend or a neighbor, everyone has been touched by this disease and wants to make the future better for those hearing the words ‘You have cancer.’”
